My current personal camera is a Canon T5i with very few clicks on the shutter (my guess is under 1000). A couple years ago our office got broken into and the crooks got away with my well-used camera (and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ). My work replaced it with the equivalent new model (a T5i).
Unfortunately, I’m not really into this camera and it’s all my work’s fault. Not that they did anything to make it bad, but rather that I rented a full frame Canon 6D for a couple weeks last summer and my personal camera hasn’t left my closet since.
When you find a camera that can do this in low light, who in their right mind wants to take an aging APS-C out for a spin? It’s like having your world rocked by the Jaguar F-Type only to have to go back to your “it also has 4 wheels” Corolla.
Taken in Glasgow, Scotland on the rental 6D
I took more photos on that 6D than I had in the entire lifetime of my T5i and T2i combined. It helped that I had one of the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! to play with.
I was cleaning out my closet today when I think I decided to sell it and attempt an upgrade. I won’t be able to afford that incredible lens, but maybe I can find an Canon L lens that I can afford.
I’ve already floated it to my social network but no takers. So questions for the photographers amongs us:
- Best place to sell your used photo equipment?
- In theory, a 6D Mark II is around the corner. Wait, or go for something like the A7 II?

Think it’s best to buy a Nikon.

As an A7 owner, I love the A7. However, if it wasn’t for the absolutely amaing Zeiss 55mm 1.8 I would of switched to fuji. Fuji’s lenses are top quality, smaller, cheaper, and their pro bodies are water resistant. Yes they have aps-c sensors but they’re very good cameras.

That’s interesting. I kind of passed over Fuji since they are aps-c. I also use my camera every now and then for work. The way I’ve been pushing our photographic style has been towards ultra-wide-angle shots. That is really difficult to do with high fidelity on APS-C (which helps set our brand apart).

I’d try KEH or B&H for selling and buying, both have well thought of buying programs for used equipment and have good selling prices for used or new equipment. I generally say go for a Nikon but the 6D mark II is nice, I’ve seen what people can do with one and was pretty impressed by the unedited photos. That Aston is especially nice, love it when a camera can kick ass in low light. Personally I’m planning on upgrading myself to a Nikon D7000/7100 by Autumn.
Post this over on Photography.kinja.com
If you don’t have authorship let McSeanerson or Agrajag know, if they aren’t mods they probably know who is. It is just escaping me who the mods are over there.

The 6D is seriously fantastic. I love mine.
I’d say to wait for that 6D Mark II.

So you’re selling a T5i?

So, as a beginner, do you think I should go for the T5i or jump for the 6D?
![]() 03/20/2016 at 23:35 |

It’s a tough call. The T5i is certainly a cheaper way in.
It’s akin to the argument of the size of a motorcycle engine. Do you jump straight to a liter on your first bike or make incremental moves from 250 to 500 to 750 to 1L?

Thanks! It’s actually an F-Type but you are forgiven (Ian Callum designed both).
It looks like pjhusa already cross posted it for me ;)

Fuji has a 10-24mm which is an equiv. of 15-35mm. It’s a great lens!

Neat. Plastic or metal?

Gah, I know it was an F-Type. At the time I posted earlier I was looking for an Aston wallpaper and typed what was floating around my brain I guess. Ian Callum is an amazing designer regardless of my airheadedness, haha.
Rad, Photography is a fun Kinja blog and I highly recommend keeping an eye on it. Everyone is always happy to offer advice and point you in the right direction.

Ooooookay, never mind then.

I’ve heard good things about selling to KEH. I just shipped off my a7 to KEH yesterday for them to appraise. They also have a really handy online tool to create an invoice and pre-paid shipping label.
I’m planning to pick up a 6D in place of the a7. The low-light performance of the 6D is what caught my eye. How is your experience with its auto-focus system?

Ah, true. I still haven’t jumped on anything because I’m waiting for a really good deal, and I’m not in a rush or anything.

Haha, I’m pleased people see me spamming photography enough to assume I’m a mod.

I cannot for the life of me remember who the mods for photography are, haha. Figured you might know for the reason you stated above!
On an unrelated note, congrats on kid number 3. How is life with 3 so far? From my experience being the oldest of 3, now 5 with step sisters, it’s pretty hectic all the time and I prefer noise to quiet to be comfortable.

It’s a bit nuts. One of the big problems is the two older children are pretty close in age so there is some intense sibling rivalry and they beat the crap out of each other. Trying to manage that while holding an infant is daunting.

Hammerhead fistpunch and CB are two of the more active mods. I think Lumpy44 might be another. Xylotek may be one as well. And maybe Argajag. I know for a fact Hammerhead and CB are.

Ah cool. When I did the online trade in calculator on my t5i, of was 10% lower than b&h and 50% lower than eBay.
I didn’t really use the autofocus on the 6d. I generally prefer to shoot full manual.

My mother put the fear of herself in us, though my 3 years younger sister and I never had a rivalry. The youngest(9 years younger than me) is extremely type A like our father and pretty in your face, whilst being extremely intelligent and intuitive. I like to believe I’m reasonably intelligent but give her a few years and she’ll leave me and our sister in the dust. Don’t know how my mother has handled us all, but I think she has done well.

What budget do you have?

It has a metal barrel

$400-500 maybe.

Not sure about B&H but the eBay prices are generally higher since they don’t have to keep a profit margin like B&H and KEH. The nice thing about B&H and KEH is you don’t have to deal with eBay and Craigsist folks. Just ship it off to them and they’ll pay you the quote. No need to interact with people.

I have no idea. All I have to say is that I’ve found car parts significantly cheaper than getting deep in photography. The one lens I really, REALLY want for my camera is $1200-1500. I could snag an extra 100hp for that.
What I need is a CHEAP hobby... unfortunately I have both the car and photo bugs...

Consider a used 40D or 50D. I have held the T5i, and I don’t like it. I think the controls on the 50D are easier to use, and the whole thing is more ergonomic.
